Tips To Help You Through A Long Distance Move Without Losing Your Mind

Posted on

When you're planning a long distance move, you have a lot of work cut out for you. Not only will you have all of the packing to do, but you're going to have several phone calls to make and research to do. Here, you'll learn a few things that you might not have thought to consider when planning for your next big move.

Hiring Long Distance Movers

First thing you should do is start looking for a long distance moving company to assist you with the move. You should have a general idea of how much help you're going to have leading up to the move, as well as the day of the move.

Will you have people around to help you pack? Will those people also be there to assist with loading the truck?

Some moving services offer packing services for you to take advantage of. If you aren't going to have much help, inquire about packing services when calling around to get moving quotes. It is better to spend the extra money for the help than it is to try to get everything done on your own and breaking or losing items along the way.

Contact Schools

If you have school-aged kids, you will have to contact the school that your kids will be attending, as well as the school that they are leaving. In some districts, you will have to go to the school and sign for the release of the kids transcripts, so be prepared to make a trip to the school to get it all taken care of.

When you contact the new school, ask about vaccination and physical requirements. Just because your child met all of the requirements at the current district doesn't mean that they will meet the requirements at the new one. It will be must easier for you to update these things before the move than it will be after.

Creditors, Banks and Insurance Agencies

These companies will all need to know that you're moving. You'll have to change your address on all of the accounts and update the billing information.

While talking with the insurance agency about the address change, ask if you have coverage for the contents of the moving truck while your things are being transported from one place to the other. Oftentimes, the contents will be covered under your homeowners insurance policy, but sometimes, a rider must be added to cover the actual value of the contents.

Start with a phone call to your local long distance movers and work from there. Soon, you'll have everything all set and ready to go and you won't have pulled your hair out in the process.
